Mt. Dhaulagiri, one of the popular 8000 m. peaks of the country, is the 7th highest mountain in the world and lies to the north-west of the beautiful valley, Pokhara. Mt. Dhaulagiri is yet also regarded as a most admired and astonishing highest snow-caped mountain which overlooks in the lone grandeur. Moreover, the mountain was first viewed by the British evaluators in India near the beginning of 1800s but reminded almost unidentified until an Austrian airborne survey in 1949.
The name of Mt. Dhaulagiri is derived from Sanskrit word “Dhavala” meaning “White” and “giri” meaning “Mountain”. Thus, Dhaulagiri literally means as the “White Mountain” and is also popular by the same name. An expedition to the white mountain was first done by the Swiss/Austrian team in 1960. The expedition to White mountain, is defenses by 6 ridges but the North-East ridge has been the normal and easy one among the climbers. The main highlight of the expedition to the white mountain is exploring the Thakali village and old monasteries. Besides, visit to Mustang and Dolpo range, understanding the culture of different community chiefly of Brahmins, Magars, and Thakali etc are also some another highlight of the trip.
Mt. Dhaulagiri, white mountian, is roughly a unique one in the world in terms of its rise above local landscape. Mt. Dhaulagiri rises about 7000 m. over Kali Gandaki gorge. In fact, the Kali Gandaki is spectacular as two highest mountains above 8000 m., Dhaulagiri and Annapurna I, mutually stands near the river in front of each other.
